Summer Rugby for CWU Rugby Players and Coaches Continues!
The past month has been a great opportunity for several of the CWU Rugby athletes. June 7th marked the final day of the Annual Wildcat High school Rugby Classic at CWU. On hand for the occasion was the Collegiate Northwest All Star Team the Loggers who took on the Super League team from Seattle, Old Puget Sound Beach (OPSB). The match was a great end to a wonderful tournament which saw high school teams from as far away as Montana in attendance. CWU was represented by 14 of the 22 man squad which included: Ryan Moore, Cameron McVicker, Matt Lobe, Pat Farrell, Sam Harb, Joe Schmid (C), Ben Nelson, Kurt Haisch, Ryan Amundsen, Lane Williams, Aaron Lee, Jordan Bahr, Tim Stanfill, and Tyler Theiss. Central coach Bob Ford served as the Head Coach for the All-star program along with Strength and Conditioning Coach Ryan Fowler who helped to administered the program along with Craig Brown (Manager) & Sean Loudenback (Assistant Coach / UW). Several CWU Players were nominated for the program but were unable to attend as they were training with the Pacific Coast Grizzlies in California for the National All-Star tournament.

Central Coach Anthony Pacheco along with players Mike Nelson, Devin Snyder, and Kellen Gordon all received Pacific Coast honors. The team members helped to round out a team of 23 which included representation from programs throughout the west coast including national champions BYU, Cal Berkley, St. Mary's College, University of Utah, and alike. All 3 CWU players received substantial playing time and contributed to the success of the Collegiate Grizzly program vs. The Mid Atlantic Rugby Football Union. Junior Fullback Mike Nelson had an outstanding performance on the day playing the full 80 minutes during which time Nelson put away his team member for a try, converted an attempt at goal, and ran in a try of his own while making several cover tackles and proving to be an elusive runner deep inside his own 22 setting up an 85 meter strike for the grizzlies.

As summer moves forward Coach Anthony Pacheco will be traveling down to Portland, Oregon to access the Pacific Northwest All-Star High school championships between Oregon, Washington and Montana. Coach Ford who was on hand with the Collegiate All-American's in Glendale, Co to identify players for All-American honors will continue with the All-Americans as they get set to tour South Africa this summer from July 26th until August 8th serving as a defensive coach for the program as they get set to take on some of the top University sides in the World.

CWU Rugby closes season with a 1 point loss to Utah 28 to 27
Central Washington University Men’s Rugby Team closed out their final match of their season in what may very well be the most dramatic game of the year. Down 14 to 0 in the first 10 minutes against the University of Utah (#6 Nationally) the wildcats fought inch by inch for the next 70 minutes only to come up 1 point shy of USA Rugby’s National Championship series Round of 16.

In a match that was so hotly contested that it literally came down to the final second of the game CWU hammered the Utah defense for nearly five minutes with over 25 consecutive phases of rugby. Looking to draw a final penalty that would have pushed the wildcats beyond the final round of the Pacific Coast Collegiate Playoffs Central moved the ball wide in one last desperate attempt to break the goal line before knocking the ball forward into a Utah defensive player who scooped the ball and booted into touch at the final whistle.

The Central loss 28 to 27 to the University of Utah was highlighted with 4 lead changes and some of the most physical play ever witnessed between the two sides as players put every once of their bodies on the line each trying to will their side to victory.

Central had several outstanding performances including Try’s by Ben Nelson. Pat Curtis, and Ryan Hamilton as well as a stunning kicking display by Junior Fly half Aaron lee who was nearly perfect on the day missing only one penalty from 40 meters out late in the second half.

Central will now look forward to their Annual Alumni Banquet and Awards ceremony that will mark the 37th year of the program May 16th, 2009. Central players, alumni, and coaches will take time to reflect on a very accomplished season in which the Wildcats defended their 2nd straight Pacific Northwest Division I League Championship. The Wildcats went undefeated against all Pac – 10 institutions including: University Of Washington, Washington State, University of Oregon and Oregon State in a home and away schedule which spanned 5 months with the wildcats accumulating a 8-0 record with 436 to 72 points for vs. Against. The only losses the wildcats suffered were against non conference teams ranked in the top 10 including #1 California, #2 BYU, #3 St. Mary;s, and #6 Utah

Central Washington Defends 2nd straight League Title
Central Washington University hosted the Washington State Cougars in Ellensburg, WA for the Pacific Northwest League Title. Action got underway at 1pm on what was a perfect day for rugby. Central dominated the line of touch in the 1st half and demonstrated great attacking ability running in 3 converted tries off greatly executed set pieces before the Cougars could get on the board in the 30 minute. WSU took a quick tap after the ref had signaled for points to dot down under the posts leaving the wildcats frustrated. Central would answer the Cougar score with 30 seconds left in the half when Fullback Mike Nelson chipped over the Cougar defense to touch down in the try zone covering almost 40 meters of field space leaving the score line 26 - 5 at the break.

Central coach Tony Pacheco gives a lot of credit to WSU for some scrappy play which got us out of our game plan on occasion, we were just lucky enough to play some really outstanding rugby throughout the rest of the match which allowed us to secure the win.

Opening the 2nd half Central was first to strike off only a minute thirty in off a 45 meter run by center Pat Curtis which saw him out step several would be tacklers before cutting back inside under the post to touch down setting up an easy conversion by Lee. It wouldn't take Central long to strike again when reserve wing Jordan Bahr sprung loose at 8 minutes into the half for a try down the left side line out pacing the Cougar defense (Lee Converted). Central would post their final score of the match at 58:56 in the match off one of the most dynamic tries of the day with the ball going through 8 sets of hands before winger Tim Stanfill would pop the ball onto Sr. Captain Joe Schmid who touched down between the posts. With the scoreline 47 to 5 the Cougars fought back hard and with great determination were able to get on the board with their final try of the game at the 79:00 minute mark. The converted try left the final score 47 to 12 in favor of the home team securing the Wildcats their 2 League title in as many years. Central will move onto the PCRFU finals in Utah were they will await #4 Nor Cal with the University Utah facing off against #5 Nor Cal. Washington State will head to Northern California as they secured the #2 spot in the Pacific Northwest and will face off against Nor Cal #3 while PNRFU #3 will take on Nor Cal #2.

CWU Head Coach Bob Ford said he is "impressed with the Wildcats last 2 performances but going forward we will be able to tell more about how the team has progressed." Central will play host to Cal in their final home game (Ellensburg, WA) of the season on March 28th with a Noon kickoff and Ford knows that will be a true test of whether Central is ready for the competition they will see in the playoffs.

The mad four-month rush for a national collegiate
championship begins in a week as many of the top warm-weather teams start
play.

It all starts Friday with Utah taking on Arizona State, and a day later Utah
plays again in probably the highest-profile matchup of the weekend against
UC Santa Barbara. Cal starts their season hosting the always physical DII
Humboldt State. St. Mary's plays a league game against Sacramento State, and
UC Davis v. Chico along with Stanford v. Nevada rounds out a very tough
NorCal league weekend.

Tough, in fact, is the operative word. Every college rugby coach has to
formulate a schedule that challenges his players, toughens them up, but
doesn't wear them down in the process. Who has the toughest buildup to the
national playoffs in April?

Cal head coach Jack Clark takes a scientific approach to how he builds up to
nationals, and it's part of why the Bears do so well at the end of the
season. Cal doesn't get enough credit for being resilient, but they are and
they learn it during the season. This year Cal plays their six league games,
which gives them plenty of opportunity to slide in some exciting friendlies.
Cal plays Canadian collegiate powers UBC twice, as usual, and also add in
the University of Calgary. They've added games with three ranked college
teams - Navy, Wyoming and Central Washington - and one game against the
Super League champions, New York Athletic Club.

So the score for Cal in the end is seven games against ranked-level college
teams (if you count the Canadians) and one game against a Super League team.

BYU (whose winter walk-on tryouts start Monday) has taken the Cal model to
heart. Head coach David Smyth decided not to have his team play in the fall
and instead concentrate on playing from mid-January straight on through. For
BYU, the snows in Provo, Utah mean they have to play one home game on turf,
and will have 14 games under their belts before they open at their home
stadium. And it's not an easy 14 games, as the Cougars open with UC Davis
and play Stanford, Minnesota, Penn State, Texas A&M, Central Washington,
the Denver Barbarians of the Super League, and the University of Utah, all
on hostile or neutral soil.

Then they end with five straight home games, with only Utah State anything
close to a sure victory. The scoreline for BYU's buildup is nine ranked
teams, and one Super League side.

Can you get any tougher than that? How about St. Mary's? Being in the NorCal
league means they play UC Davis and Chico State twice, as well as Cal once.
They add in Dartmouth, but no Super League teams, no Canadians, and their
other out-of-region ranked opponents were all in the fall. Seven ranked
opponents.

It's worth noting that the Southern California teams are all in a new league
where they play each other twice. UCSB, San Diego State, Cal Poly, UCLA and
Arizona all need look no further than league play to see a tough lineup of
matches. SDSU and Cal Poly have loaded up on other ranked opponents, too.

The dark horse candidate may well be Central Washington. Eager to ensure his
team doesn't get blindsided in the playoffs, head coach Bob Ford has loaded
up his side's schedule. They've already played the Seattle men's club, Utah
and St. Mary's. They have their regular Pacific Northwest schedule, and
added to that this spring will be BYU, and Cal. Five ranked teams and a very
good men's club. But few can say they will have faced both the Bears and the
Cougars this spring.

In the end, it's clear that despite Cal playing UBC twice as well as the
Super League champions, BYU's combination of a loaded schedule and the
number of road games they need to play makes them owners of the toughest
spring schedule this year.

Will it be enough to get them ready to unseat Cal?

Central Sweep Pacific Northwest: CWU 21 - OSU 10

Central Washington has continued its winning ways with a 21-10 decision against Oregon State in Corvallis, OR, Saturday in the Pacific Northwest Conference.

The Wildcats led 8-5 at the half in a two-try apiece game. The match was played on a softish pitch, which resulted in dropped ball and some sloppy play around the fringes.
Mike Nelson and Devin Snyder scored CWU’s tries, while Aaron Lee booted three penalty goals and a conversion.

“We played some guys out of position to help build our depth,” Central Washington head coach Bob Ford told ARN. The contest brought CWU’s fall league play to an end after sweeping the opposition. The Wildcats are scheduled to travel to Moraga in northern
California next week to take part in the Pat Vincent Cup hosted by St Mary’s.

CWU 47 - UW 6

Central Washington University has taken over sole possession of first
place in the standings after beating Washington 47-6 in a Pacific
Northwest conference game Saturday in Ellensburg, WA.

The Wildcats were too much for the Huskies and led 27-3 at halftime.
UW started strongly and tested the CWU defense early on around the
fringes. Central Washington managed to adjust and took control of the
game. Mike Nelson (2), Tim Stanfill (2), and captain Joe Schmid were
among the try-scorers. Aaron Lee added the rest via his boot.

“We gave them three opportunities for shots at goal in the first half,
but in the second half we didn’t give them any opportunities,” Central
Washington head coach Bob Ford told ARN.

Central Wins League Opener 67-0

Central Washington opened their league season with a massive victory over the University of Oregon in front of a large Homecoming crowd in Ellensburg, Wash.

Central opened the scoring at the 3:50 mark when No. 8 Sam Harb picked up off the back of a tackle situation deep inside the Oregon 22. 5-0 CWU.

At 8:39 Central was back on the board when team captain Joe Schmid found his way through the Oregon line. Flyhalf Aaron Lee converted and he then added a try of his own four minutes later to make it 19-0. Center Ben Nelson punched through the Oregon defense for a try and soon thereafter winger Tim Stanfill broke loose on a 40-meter dash (converted) to make it 33-0.

Twenty-six minutes in fullback Jordan Bahr made it 40-0 on a long run started on the blind side by Harb. With less than a minute to play in the first half Harb scored his second of the day to make it 45-0.

In the seconnd half Central worked quickly to get on the board again as wing Devin Snyder finished his first of his two on the day. Stanfill followed that up with a score and then blindside flanker Ryan Moore added. Snyder closed out the scoring with his second with 20 minutes remaining.

ryan moore vs utahThe University of Utah and Central Washington University are no strangers. Meeting for the 3rd time in less than a year Utah came in as highly ranked favorites and with a 2-0 lead on the series. After soundly defeating the University of Washington Utah heading to Ellensburg to take on last years Pacific Northwest Champions Central Washington University would prove to be a challenging task.

The Wildcats eager to defend their title from last year and to try and work towards evening the series between the two sides came out hard and were rewarded heavily for their efforts. The opening ten minutes of the match saw both team sizing each other up and no one willing to risk a mistake but at the 9:30 mark Central's inside center Ryan Hamilton sliced through the utah defense connected with central wing devin snyder who then passed back inside to fullback Mike Nelson to finish a 50 meter strke touching down between the posts. Flyhalf Aaron Lee who is really coming into his own was good on the conversion giving the wildcats 7-0 lead over the utes. Following the early try by the wildcats Utah came on strong pressing inside the Central 22 but the wildcats who showed great defensive pressure throughout the day held the line and eventually drew a penalty to clear lines and releive the pressure. Central would go onto to squander two opportunities inside the 22 but were rewarded with their efforts eventually as Aaron Lee converted a penalty from 30 meters out to give the wildcats a 10-0 lead at half.

utah cwuComing off the break the Wildcats new they needed an early strike to put some distance between them and a very athletic Utah squad. Off the kickoff Central's scrumhalf Kurt Haisch who came onto relieve Chris Harriage placed a box kick deep into the utah half and cental's winger Jordan Bahr came away with the ball beating 2 defenders to touch down for Central 2nd try on the day. After the Lee conversion Central lead 17-0. But Utah wasn't ready to go away. 5 minutes later Utah worked they way into the Central 22 and were rewarded with a 5 meter scrum off a not straight throwin by CWU. Capitalizing on the central mistake Utah's #8 picked up off the back and found his way through for Utah 1st score on the day. A converted try made it 17-7 but that was the closest it would be. 7 minutes later Central played their way into the Utah half and after a mishandle by the utes Central took full advantage of the insueing scrum putting winger Devin Snyder away off the base with a 30 meter run to give central a 22-7 lead as Lee was unable to convert. Central would close out the scoring with a converted penalty with 6 mintues left in the match to see them through and level the score line 25-7.

According to head coach Bob Ford "Central did what they needed to in order to come away with the victory but hats off to Utah. They are a great side and we will definalty see more from them in the future." With the victory Central will surely be a side to beat as the Utah was previously ranked #2 in the National by multiple polls. Central will look to extend their undefeated streek when they take on the University of Oregon next weekend in Ellensburg. Action gets underway at 10am October 25, 2008.
